How do I clean and sterilise Philips Avent bottles and teats?

Always clean and sterilise all of the parts from your Philips Avent bottle that come into contact with milk after each use. You can clean all of the parts by washing them manually or in a dishwasher. Sterilise the bottle parts by boiling them for 5 minutes, or sterilise them in a Philips Avent steriliser. Follow the instructions below.

Manual cleaning

1.Disassemble the bottle, screw ring, AirFree vent insert (if applicable) and teat.

2.Wash all of the parts in a clean bowl with a soft brush (only use a mild washing-up liquid).

3.Remove any food residues and rinse thoroughly.

4.Using your dishwasherDisassemble the bottle, screw ring, AirFree vent insert (if applicable) and teat.

5.Place all of the parts on the top rack of your dishwasher (only use a mild washing-up liquid or tablet).

Note: Avoid flannels, (abrasive) sponges and brushes with bristles that may tear the silicone or could lead the ink to come off the bottle. We advise you to use the Philips Avent bottle and teat brush.

Always make sure that you thoroughly clean your bottles before sterilising.

Sterilising by boiling

1.Disassemble the bottle, screw ring, AirFree vent insert (if applicable) and teat.

2.Put the parts in a household pot and pour plenty of cold or lukewarm water into it. Never not put a cold GLASS bottle into hot water, as this could damage it.

3.Bring the water to the boil.

4.Boil for 5 minutes. Make sure that the parts do not touch the side of the pot. This prevents deformation and damage.

5.After sterilising, wait for the parts to cool down.

Sterilising in a Philips Avent steriliser

1.Disassemble the bottle, screw ring, AirFree vent insert (if applicable) and teat.

2.Sterilise all of the parts by following the instructions in the steriliser user manual.

3.Make sure that the parts do not touch each other. This prevents deformation and damage.

4.Do not sterilise the teat too long, as this can weaken it.

5.After sterilising, wait for the parts to cool down.

Are Philips Avent bottles suitable for the freezer?

Yes, all Philips Avent plastic bottles—fully assembled and closed—can be stored in the freezer and used for pre-cooked food.

Do not store glass bottles in the freezer, as those may break.

Can I use a microwave to warm up my Philips Avent bottle?

We do not recommend using a microwave to warm up baby's food or drinks.

Microwaves might alter the quality of food/drinks and destroy some valuable nutrients. Microwaves do not heat evenly and they might leave “hot spots”, which could scald your baby.

When heating up your Philips Avent bottle in the microwave, please only place the container without screw ring, AirFree vent, teat and cap. Always stir heated content to ensure even heat distribution and check the temperature before serving.

For which kind of food can I use the variable flow teat?

We recommend to use this teat for thick liquids such as AR (thickened) milk, milk mixed with cereals (baby rice), milk mixed with baby food and soup.

Once the consistency becomes too thick for this teat, we recommend using the Thick Feed Teat.

Why are Avent teats and soothers made of silicon instead of latex?

The advantages of Silicone compared to Latex:

1.Highly transparent, for a natural and hygienic aspect

2.Suitable for people with a latex allergy

3.Silicone rubber is more durable than latex rubber

4.Sturdy - hard for baby to bite through

5.Tasteless and odourless - makes breast feeding compatibility easier. Latex smells and tastes of rubber, and can cause the baby to reject mum's breast

6.Can be sterilised using boiling water, steam or cold water method

7.Microwave resistant and dishwasher-proof

Does my Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump work with all pumping bras?

The Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump works with pumping bras, which have larger slit openings through which you can fit the funnel of the pump body.

We suggest that you do not use a pumping bra with circular holes in place of slits. The way our breast pump is assembled, it is not possible to attach the pump body through the bra, therefore you need to use a bra with which you can fit the funnel through the opening.

How do I remove the white/brown spots on my Philips Avent steriliser's heating plate?

The white/brown spots are limescale. They build up in appliances as the residue of minerals that are naturally contained in water, which fail to evaporate when water is heated. The harder the water, the faster scale builds up. Although it is not harmful as such, it is unsightly, hard to clean, and can impair the operation of appliances or damage their components if allowed to build up. It is recommended to descale the steriliser at least every 2 weeks to ensure that it works efficiently. Follow the instructions below on how to properly descale your device.

1.Pour 12 ml/0.5 oz of white vinegar (5% acetic acid) and 120 ml/4.5 oz of water into the water reservoir.

2.Wait for 6 hours or overnight for best results, or until all the limescale has dissolved.

3.Empty the water reservoir and rinse it thoroughly.

4.If you still see traces of scale, remove it by sponge. Rinse again and wipe the base with a damp cloth.

●Note: Use only citric acid-based descalers and avoid all other types.
